In previous articles on the topic of performance management and appraisal, we covered the ten stupid things managers do to screw up performance appraisal, and a similar article on ways human resource departments screw up the process. Now it`s time to turn our attention to employees!

Generally, when performance appraisal goes awry, the primary cause has little to do with employees. For the most part, employees take their cues from management and human resources. However, when individual employees perceive the process in negative ways, they caan create or damage even the best of appraisal processes.

I have had an idea recently of setting up some Outdoor Shops this summer. When I talked about the idea to my friend, she was really excited and asked to become involved in them with me. One of the most appealing things about Outdoor Shops to me is that they will not require any large rents to pay for premises. This is something that would really cut down overheads and make the Outdoor Shops potentially much more successful than those which require a shop front to work from. We are spending a lot of time thinking about what to sell at the moment and one of the ideas that has come to us is gourmet food stuffs. The reason for this is that, in the summer, we feel that many people go for walks and they are often thinking about preparing lovely food for the evenings. The success of farmers markets have shown how successful this sort of trade can be and, as it is something we are both really interested in, I am sure we will really enjoy it. One of the things I am finding most exciting is sourcing all our products as I love looking at foodstuffs from different countries.
